Ghana Premier League Champions Obuasi AshGold began the 2016 CAF Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mououdia Olmpique de Bejaia of Algeria at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on Sunday.
The Algerian side came into the game to frustrate, defend and counter the miners on the break but Ashgold led by one of the Ghana’s finest technical brains, Bashiru Hayford saw the trick and quickly varied his tactics and that enable them to score the only goal in the 60th minute courtesy left wing back, Tijani Joshua’s exquisite strike.
MO Bejaia who are currently fourth on the Algeria league table with 31 points put in decent performance, defending and clearing their lines effectively and efficiently but the Obuasi lads managed to weave their way in to score to appease their fans that came in their numbers to cheer them.
AshGold deserved a victory by a wider margin to virtually seal the tie in the first leg to make the return encounter in North Africa a mere formality but their strikers were wasteful upfront as they failed to convert the numerous of chances created.
The home side got off to excellent start, racing ahead in the second minute when skipper Eric Opoku, winner of Ghana Premier League best player last season teased a cross to the penalty box of the visitors but Fuseini Nuhu couldn’t plant the ball into the net.
Bejaia were unable to find a route through Ashgold stern defence, the home side dealing comfortably with any crosses into the box.
AshGold will travel to Algeria in two weeks to play the second leg with the aggregate winner earning through to the next stage of Africa’s biggest club tournament.
