Serious water shortage has hit the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region as a result of a connection made for the Central University College at Dawhenya, in the Ningo/Prampram District, also in the Greater Accra Region.
The effect of this water shortage goes as far as creating serious bedroom problems. Women in the coastal communities of the Ada west district are forced to keep wake at the taps just for water and that is seriously inconveniencing their husbands, that’s according to the Assembly member for Lolonya, Hon. Joseph Rockson Ahuakesey.
For water to flow in the taps during the day is more of a miracle than any other thing. And if it comes, it becomes a do-or-die affair. Women, men and children virtually fight for water with no regards to relationships.
Sometimes for about two months, water doesn’t flow at all. At such times, school children have the option to either wash their feet and face and go to school early or go hunting for water and be late for school.
In 2009. a water project which was started in 2007 was commissioned to solve the water crisis being experienced by communities in the North Tongu, Ningo /Prampram, Shai/Osudoku and Ada districts. But that joy only lasted for a year.
According to the people, the Central University College which was not in the original project are rather enjoying reliable flow of water at the expense of the communities which are supposed to be the primary beneficiaries.
The problem persists with no sign of ending soon, despite numerous complaints made to managers of the project and a demonstration by the Sege community.
The community water project, by design, was supposed to involve the beneficiary communities at every level of the project but the Assembly members say they were not consulted before the connection was made for Central University College, an action they describe as corrupt and unacceptable.
