The Manhyia Palace, home of the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, is today hosting a ‘Special Akwasidae’ Festival.
The event is to kick start series of others planned to mark 17 years on the Golden Stool by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Key figures from Ghana’s chieftaincy, corporate and political institutions including President John Mahama are attending the event.
The Akwasidae Festival is celebrated every 42 days.
Later today, Otumfuo will sit in state to receive guests from all parts of the world, the Ghanaian representation, the highest.
Administrative hands at the Palace say the occasion will be used to display the rich cultural heritage of the Ashanti people.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is expected to be escorted to the durbar grounds in a uniquely golden Ashanti style.
Today’s event will be followed by a Thanksgiving Service at the St. Cyprian Anglican Cathedral on Tuesday.
Ascending to the throne as absolute Monarch on April 26, 1999, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the youngest son of Asantehemaa Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.
Privately known as Barima Kwaku Duah, he remains an iconic symbol of hope for the Chieftaincy institution across the world.
Duah succeeded his late brother Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.
