Management of the state salt company, Ada Songor salt project, has been accused of ‘flirting’ with the Member of Parliament for Sege, Christian Otuteye and his family.
Salt dealers who transact business with the company have alleged that during lean seasons when salt is in high demand, management hoards the salt and sells to the MP and his sister alone; a situation they discribed as unfair.
The Management has also been accused of recruiting workers on political lines. Salt dealers and residents in communities around the Songor Salt lagoon made these allegations in an interview with Adacommunityonline.com.
They claimed that only NDC activists are employed at Songor Salt Project, while people perceived to be affiliated to other political parties are rejected.
But chairman of the Songor Salt Project management committee, Col. Jacob Dortey (rtd) has denied both allegations. He admitted that the sister of the MP is one of the customers of the company but at no point in time was salt hoarded and sold to her alone nor any other person; adding that his marketing department deals with all their costumers justly.
On the issue of employment, Col. Dortey said, no background checks are done to ascertain one’s political affiliation before recruitment. He explained that people are employed purely on their qualifications and competence.
Chairman Dortey noted that, being in a political season, there was the tendency for people to make wild allegations to score political points but cautioned the public to desist from spreading such false rumours about the company, since it could discourage potential investors.
The Ada Songor Salt basin is solar dependent and so during raining seasons, the ponds are not able to crystalize, making salt very scarce.
