Deputy Water Resources, Works and Housing Minister, Sampson Ahi has said that privatization of power distributor, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will solve problems surrounding electricity supply and distribution in the country.
According to him, a committee set up to investigate the several complaints, especially about over-billing, concluded that there were, indeed, anomalies associated with the use of the new billing software.
He said the ECG is not delivering on their mandate as required.
“Some concerns raised by Ghanaians are very genuine. We really have problems with the billing software because there is no software that bills a consumer more than he should expect and so the best way to fix the ECG problem is to privatize it” he said.
Government is currently inviting investors to take over the management of the ECG. The move has been informed by the company’s inability to remain solvent over the years.
However, the partial privatization move being pursued by the government has been fiercely resisted by workers of the power distributor.
The privatization of the power distributor is part of conditions that the country should meet before it starts accessing the $500 million Millennium Challenge Compact Funds from the US government.
However, Mr. Ahi, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bodi constituency in the Western Region believes privatizing ECG, will be in the best interest of the company and ultimately Ghanaians.
