To mark the 2016 edition of MTN’s annual employee volunteer programme, 21 Days of Y’ello Care, MTN staff refurbished an existing classroom block for Mampong School for Deaf and created a Resource Centre within the block for the school.
MTN staff volunteers also provided a laptop, microphones, an LCD TV and overhead projector and
installed a voice to text software to enhance teaching and learning.
The software enables teachers who are not trained in sign language to teach effectively whilst the overhead projector will be used to project lesson notes. This will improve the general teaching & learning experience in the school.
Speaking on the provision of a resource center for the school, Mr. Joseph Sam, Headmaster of Mampong School for the Deaf, said he was
extremely excited about the project because it came at the right time and would assist teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. He added that the refurbishment and provision of the resource center would enable the institution to move from the rented location currently being used for that purpose to their own permanent site, and is a big relief.
Commenting on the activities, the Corporate Service Executive of MTN, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor said, “we
commit our resources to support the development of the educational sector because, education is an area that is particularly close to our hearts and we believe there is a direct link between improved literacy levels and the socio-economic development of our communities.”
With a focus on education for the fourth consecutive year, MTN staff volunteers operated under the theme “Investing in Education for All.” In line with the theme, staff volunteers embarked on projects aimed at promoting education and inculcating Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into teaching and learning to help bridge the digital divide.
In other parts of the country, MTN staff volunteers in partnership with MultiChoice Ghana and Ghana Education Service, equipped six Senior High Schools with digital satellite television systems, Exlpora decoders and high quality teaching and learning resources that are part of DSTV’s Educational bouquet. The Education bouquet provides access to lessons in subjects such as English, Science, History, Mathematics, and Geography.
The resource centers will extend scarce teaching resources to a wider and more diverse audience whilst deploying technology in a cost effective manner to improve education. The beneficiary schools are Agogo State SHS (Ashanti Region), Fiaseman SHS (Western Region), Juaben SHS (Eastern Region), Lassi Tuolo SHS (Upper West), Savelugu SHS (Northern Region) and Our Lady of Mercy SHS (Greater Accra).
MTN Ghana launched the 10th edition of its annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care employee volunteer initiative on the 1st of June 2016 to enable MTN employees devote time and resources to assist communities in development projects.
The 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign also involves competition amongst MTN operations across MTN Group’s 22 operating companies, to secure the highest number of staff involved in volunteerism and implement projects with remarkable impact. The winning operating company receives prize money of $100,000 to be reinvested in community projects.
MTN Ghana remains the most awarded for volunteerism and projects, picking up the 2008 WECA (West and Central Africa) Regional award, overall Y’ello Care Challenge winners for years 2010 & 2011. Additionally, MTN Ghana won Y’ello Care ICT Project for 2013, Y’ello Care Innovation Project award for 2014 and Y’ello Care Integrity Award for 2015.
