Ayariga to sue EC for saying he will surely lose the election

The flag bearer of the All People’s Party (APC), Hassan Ayariga has stated that he will drag the Electoral Commission Chair to court for saying that he will lose the December 7 polls.

EC Chair, Charlotte Osei

The EC Chair, Charlotte Osei has been quoted as saying on a UK Platform over the weekend that there is no need for violence during the December 7 polls, as the election will definitely produce one winner, and ‘certainly several losers including Hassan Ayariga.’

“One wonders that for a country that has had so many elections, even just the fourth republic, why does every election year bring this tension and this fear that the country is going to implode just because we are having an election. There is going to be one winner, and depending on how many candidates are cleared by the Supreme Court on Monday, certainly several losers including Hassan Ayariga I’m sure. There really is no basis for the tension,” she said.

But speaking to Pulse.com.gh, Mr Ayariga said the comments are rather unfortunate.

He said: “When we are done with the filing today and tomorrow, and we are properly accepted, I will send her to court. You see as a returning officer you have no right to sit at an international platform, or declare at a national platform, that this person will lose the election. You don’t have that right; that means that automatically you are bias. You have already taken a stance.

“If you say there is going to be one winner, fine, several losers, that’s okay but don’t add that including Hassan Ayariga for sure. You’ve taken a stance already, and that stance is dangerous.”

The Supreme Court on Monday morning dismissed the EC’s suit challenging the High court ruling asking it to allow the PPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Nduom to correct his nomination form errors.

A Seven-member panel on Monday asked the election management body to extend the nomination period to November 8, and allow the candidates to correct their mistakes in order to contest the polls.

The court also ordered the discontinuation of the various court cases regarding the disqualification of other presidential aspirants.

Mr Ayariga said he will sue the EC over the matter because “Already, she has wasted enough of our time and that one too I will go to court claiming damages, because a lot of our voters are discouraged.”
