A son in-law of a former governor of the Bank of Ghana has been sente sentenced to 13 years following his role in trying to import 400 kilos of cocaine.
David McDermott is alleged to be a member of an organised crime syndicate from Liverpool responsible for a failed smuggling operation discovered by Border Force at Tilbury Docks in May 2013, when officers seized 400kg (881Ibs) of cocaine smuggled into the country in a container of frozen Argentinian beef.
He is the last of seven members of the group to be jailed.
He was caught in Ghana in March 2016 and was subsequently extradited to the UK in May.
He pleaded guilty on the basis that he conspired to import 50 kilos of the 400 kilo load at Liverpool Crown Court.
The cocaine had a value to organised crime of £15m but if cut and sold it would have had a potential street value of approximately £71m.
McDemott who is married to Ramona Wampah stepdaughter of the Bank of Ghana Governor Henry Kofi Wampah was arrested in a collaborative effort by the UK authorities and the BNI for alleged drug ofences. He was one of the most wanted criminals in the UK for smuggling cocaine into the UK.
