The Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Pius Enam Hadzide has assured that Team Ghana would improve on their previous performance at the Commonwealth Games by targeting five medals in Australia, Gold Coast.
Ghana has been participating in almost all Commonwealth Games since attaining independence and have won about 60 medals, hoping to add more this year as the country participates in 12 sporting disciplines.
At the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Ghana won two bronze medals in Judo and Boxing. Razak Abugri represented Ghana in the Men’s 60kg Judo whiles Abdul Omar fought in the Men’s Flyweight Boxing category.
At a short send-off ceremony for the participants of this year’s games held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, the Deputy Sports Minister revealed the theme for Team Ghana as “From Gold Coast to Gold Coast for gold”. He said the theme was inspired by government’s belief in the ability of every Ghanaian to conquer in every field.
“Our Operation is entitled ‘from Gold Coast to Gold Coast for gold’, we say this because we are confident that the athletes are ready, committed and have been trained well by the coaches.”
Pius Enam Hadzide continued that the team is going to camp in Australia to help them adapt to the weather and boost their confidence to win more medals.
“We are confident that we can improve on our performance at the last commonwealth games in Glasgow were Ghana won two medals. We are anticipating to win a minimum of five medals, our athletes and coaches have assured us that they would work hard to achieve this modest expectation of ours,” he said.
