The government has set aside $15,000 as reward package for any athlete who wins a gold medal at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia. Silver medals will attract $3000 and $2000 will be given to any athlete who wins a bronze medal.
Deputy Minister of Sports and Chairman of the International Games Committee, Pius Enam Hadzide, made the announcement at the Sports Minister’s Meet the Press in Accra.
Hadzide however explained that only $5,000 of the gold medal figure is from the coffers of the government of Ghana with a private company offering to pay $10,000.
“We have decided to allocate $5,000 for gold, $3000 for silver and $2000 for bronze. However, an Australian company which has been operating in Ghana for the past 35 years has decided to add an extra $10,000 for gold, so in effect, it’s $15,000,” Hadzide disclosed.
Ghana’s contingent for the games have landed in Gold Coast, Australia for a 3-week camp before the games kick off on April 4.
