Ghanaian athletes interact with school pupils in Gold Coast

Some selected Ghanaian athletes for next week’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia visited the Arundel State School to interact with pupils ahead of the games.

The visit formed part of arrangements made by Team Ghana increase their publicity and also make their presence felt in Gold Coast which according to history was the original name of Ghana.

Athletes were selected from boxing, cycling, para-cycling and athletics. They were accompanied by the Chef de Mission of Ghana, Mohammed Sahnoon and other officials from Team Ghana.

Principal of the school, Michael Kelly, welcomed the team and expressed his gratitude to the athletes for taking time of their training schedules to visit the school and interact with the pupils.

He said at the Arundel State School, they are committed to putting the interests of children first in their everyday operation, hence the need to get some athletes to the school for the pupils to have a feel of the games.

He introduced Ghana’s flagbearer, Abdul Wahib Omar, and captain of Team Ghana Raphael Botso Nkegbe, to the pupils and wished them well in their respective competitions.

“Once again we feel privilege that you have chosen our school as part of your efforts to make the games popular and we appreciate your time with our kids,” the Principal said.

Physical Education teacher and coordinator of Ghana’s visit, Tamara Lassau, gave an insight into Ghana’s participation in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Ghana’s chef de mission, Mohammed Sahnoon, also touched on the history of Ghana and explained the change of name from Gold Coast to Ghana; he also explained the colours of the Ghana flag to the teachers and pupils.

There was also an open forum session where the pupils had an opportunity to ask the Ghanaian delegation questions related to the preparations for the games and also had some photo sessions with Ghanaian athletes.
