The leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked for forgiveness from grassroots members as it seeks to mend the cracks within the party that led to the party’s humiliating defeat in the 2016 general elections.
Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu and Minority NDC Spokesperson, Allhaji ABA Fuseini admitted that there is a disconnect within the party, adding that the lessons learnt will ensure victory in the 2020 polls.
“Those of us in the leadership of the NDC in the run-up to the 2016 election committed many mistakes from his excellency the President to the Vice President, to the Ministers to us the MPs, the National Executives, every one of us even including some of us in this room we were all fallible in one way or the other.
“And so like Ex-President Mahama has passionately accepted responsibility and appealed to us, I want to reiterate that we should find space in our hearts to forgive one another. We should find space in our hearts to leave what happened yesterday behind, I’m not saying we should forget it, let’s keep it in our memory so that we don’t go back and make the same mistakes but let’s forgive and move forward. When you trip and fall, you don’t look at where you’re falling, you look at where you tripped so that you can draw useful lessons.”
Hon. ABA Fuseini was speaking at a forum organized by the student wing of the NDC, the Tertiary Institution Network (TEIN) in the Eastern Regional Capital, Koforidua.
Former President John Mahama, then flag bearer of the NDC, lost by more than 9% of total votes to the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo.
Akufo-Addo obtained a staggering 5,716,609 of total votes cast in the 2016 elections, representing 53.84%, to snatch the Presidency from John Mahama, who secured 4,713,277 votes (44.40%).
