An electrician has been dragged before an Accra circuit court for possessing military accoutrements without lawful authority.
The accused, Kwadwo Afrifa, 49 years of age, was arrested by the police allegedly having 60 pieces of pepper spray, 19 pieces of flashlight shocker and 77 pieces of 800 type self-defensive flashlight shocker in his room.
Before trial judge, Aboagye Tandoh, Afrifa denied the offence.
The trial judge accordingly admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢10,000 with two sureties, who should be public servants.
Hearing continues on May 31.
Narrating the series of events leading to the arrest of the accused, Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) A. A. Annor said the complainants are police personnel stationed at Mampong in the Ashanti Region while the accused person is also a resident of the town.
He said on May 6, 2016, at about 12pm, police gathered intelligence that the accused was dealing in pepper spray and other equipment.
The police, he said, then proceeded to an electrical shop with the inscription, “No Jesus, No Life,” and met the accused who claimed ownership of the shop.
According to DSP Annor, one flashlight shocker and 19 pepper sprays were found in the shop after a search was conducted.
The court further heard that Afrifa led the law enforcers to his house and a search conducted revealed the aforementioned items in his room.
DSP Annor said the accused in his caution statement to the police, admitted the offence and maintained that one Bob came to his shop on May 6, 2016, at about 8am in a van claiming that he had brought them from Holland and was offering them for sale.
The prosecutor also said Afrifa stated that he bought the items at the cost of GH¢10,900.
