Folks of Ningo Traditional Area have a belief that when a ritually decorated cow is thrown alive into the deep sea, the fishing gods will be happy and fishermen will as a result catch more fishes.
That’s why nearly one thousand people, mostly fishermen and fishmongers on Tuesday may 17th May, 2016 assembled at Nugo Lekpongunor in the Greater Accra Region to perform a ritual to a god called ‘Nawor’ meaning cow god.
The fishermen claimed their inability to catch aboundant fish these days is because they ceased performing the annual rituals for their fishing god, Nawor , accordingly a fortune god they inherited from their ancestors.
The acting chief of the area, Manklalo Kanor Atiapa on Tuesday led the community to perform the ritual with mass attendance. They sunk a live cow into the sea at Lekpongunor to climax the rituals
They hope that fishermen will get more catch fourteen days after the sacrifice.
Fishermen from the various beaches in the Greater Accra Region were seen in their customary wear.
Nene Atiapa led the spiritualist to sink the sacred cow but the animal was seen dead at a beach near Wokumagber in Ada.
The indegenes say it’s a sign of misfortune because the cow was not supposed to be seen either dead or alive according to the rites.
