Sexual violence against girls in school is overlooked obstacle to girls empowerment in Ghana. Children who suffer Sexual violence at times end up with teenage pregnancy thereby increases students risk of Sexual transmitted diseases.
Culture to extent prevent girls who fall victim of these act from reporting to the appropriate authorities for action to be taken against perpetrators. Many atimes, family heads settle Sexual voilence cases at homes without taking into consideration the consequences.
Henceforth, school girls in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region will report Sexual assualt cases through an innovative way using technology.
Accra based Women’s Rights advocacy Organizations called Gender studies and Human Rights Documentation Center are Co piloting with Votomobile to assist school girls to use cell phones against Sexual voilence for safer schools. The project which is being supported by Amplify Change doners will train and empower school clubs to use mobile technology to report perpetrators
In a project implementation consultation workshop with stake holders of Ada Traditional area, the project Director Mrs Dorcas Coker Appiah says, the programme is being implemented in the wenchi District, Nkoranza, Kintampo, Ledzekuku Kruwor and Ada.
She disclosed that, girls clubs in the various schools would be provided with one phone per group to report any Sexual abuse to a special hotline for the necessary information and assistance needed.
Mrs Dorcas Coker Appiah in a facilitation at the Ada East Assembly Hall on Wednesday says specially trained officers will be at post to recieve the calls. The process will not attract any fee or credit from the callers she said. The Traditional Authorities, Heads of the decentralised departments, representatives of the schools, leaders of the various youth groups, Christian Council of Churches amongst others attended the briefing.
