President of the Catholic Bishop Conference, Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu has lauded the Electoral Commission for taking a bold decision to disqualify some presidential candidates.
According to the Bishop, that was the only way the country could build strong institutions.
In an exclusive interview with pulse.com.gh, Rev. Osei-Bonsu challenged Ghana to embrace the decision of the Electoral Commission.
“The Electoral Commission must be given a free hand to operate, we must respect state institutions and that if the EC did what it did within remit of the laws of Ghana, then we (Ghana Catholic Bishop Conference) can’t question the decision of the Electoral Commission to disqualify some of the political parties.”
Rev Osei- Bonsu revealed this during the annual Bishop Conference held in Tamale on Tuesday October 11.
Also present at the conference was the Electoral Commission Chairperson,Mrs. Charlotte Osei, the Interior Minister, Mr.Prosper Bani, the IGP, Mr.John Kudalor, Director of Prisons, Mr.Emmanuel Adzator and other dignitaries.
The Ghana Catholic Bishop Conference is a body of catholic bishops that meet annually to make their views known on national issues.
The EC on Monday announced the disqualification of 12 candidates including The Peoples National Convention’s (PNC) Dr. Edward Nasigri Mahama, the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP)’s Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum, the All Peoples Congress, Hassan Ayariga, and the National Democratic Party (NDP)’s Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings for failing to meet the criteria for filing as president.
Meanwhile the GCBC will at the end of their conference in Tamale on Friday issue a communique which will address the upcoming elections.
