The much anticipated elections of the Ada East District Assembly to confirm the president’s nominee for DCE could not come off. This is due to a letter from the Deputy District Coordinator postponing the election indefinitely.
The letter that was circulated yesterday stated that the directive for the postponement of the election was from the Regional Coordinating Director.
Though most of the Assembly members were present at the Ada College of Education ready to cast their vote endorsing or rejecting the nominee, Hon. Sarah Dugbakie Pobee, the District Electoral Officer didn’t turn up.
After a closed door meeting between the leadership of assembly members, the district commanders of Police for Ada East and West and the District Chief Executive of Ada West, the DCE for Ada West, Hon. A.L. Akrofi apologised on behalf of the Greater Accra Regional Minister for the letter which announced the postponement of the confirmation elections.
According to the DCE, that was not the clear instruction from the Regional Ministry. He declared the action unconstitutional and stated that the Regional Ministry have no knowledge of such a letter.
But in a sharp contrast in an interview with Radio Ada immediately after the assembly meeting, the deputy District coordinator, Mr. Kwadwo Gyamfi, who signed the letter postponing the elections said he acted on directives from the Regional Coordinating Director to postpone the elections indefinitely.
He therefore urged Radio Ada to verify this information from the Regional coordinating director and not a third party. He was however not willing to disclose whether the directive came verbally or through formal letter to his office.
That not withstanding, the assembly members asked that the deputy coordinating director to render an apology to Ada and all Assembly members. Some even asked for his immediate transfer from the district.
