Government in line with a deal reached with the world football governing body FIFA, has withdrawn the case filed at the High Court to liquidate the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The government on August 16 agreed with FIFA to stop all process it initiated to dissolve the GFA in the aftermath of the corruption exposé in the country’s football administration by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Per the agreement, Ghana was to withdraw the court case it initiated to wind up the GFA whose president Kwesi Nyantakyi and other members were caught up in bribery allegations.
Consequent to that, Deputy Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, on Tuesday appeared before the court to withdraw the case, stating government was satisfied with the agreement.
“In terms of an achievement of the object of the petition, we have seen a satisfaction of the object that is why we decided to withdraw,” he told journalists after the court hearing.
Withdrawing the case, Mr. Dame informed the court that the GFA executive committee will now be replaced with a normalisation committee to oversee the daily management of football in the country.
The normalisation committee, he explained, would assuming the powers of dissolved GFA executive committee, and will have the mandate to review the FA’s statues to meet the recommendations of FIFA as well as see to the organisation of election of executives.
“Within the next two days, FIFA will constitute the normalisation committee; It’s a decision that we took in Zurich,” Mr. Dame told the journalists outside the courtroom, saying “they will assume the powers of GFA”.
