The second edition of Ghana’s first international beach soccer tournament will take place at the Aborigines Beach Resorts in Keta from 24th-28th March, 2016. The event will headline the Easter celebrations in Keta and is dubbed “Beach Sports, Music, Cultural and Dance Festival”
The Keta Cup is organised by Ghana’s most successful beach soccer club side Sunset Sports Keta under the auspices of the Ghana Beach Soccer Association (GBSA) with support from Aborigines Beach Resorts and the UK’s Sandlanders Football.
The maiden event during Easter 2015 was a great success, bringing together thousands of spectators and beach soccer teams from Ghana and Nigeria supported by sponsors including Marie Stopes International, Glory Oil and Ayekoo Bitters.
Supporters were treated to performances by the Nananom Dance Ensemble and live DJ throughout the event which concluded with a beach party enjoyed by Keta supporters, friends and family who turned up in large numbers.
The 2016 event promises to be more exciting as organizers are hoping to attract top beach soccer club sides from African power horses Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Nigeria with surprise South African and European sides also being considered.
Objectives of the Event and benefits to the local community
As the second edition of the first international club tournament to be taking place in Ghana, we hope that the Keta Cup will be another historic milestone in the growth of the sport in the country and to promote the development of beach soccer among the youth in the Keta Municipality.
Keta is the most recognizable beach soccer community in Ghana and boast of the two top sides in the Ghana beach soccer championship. The teams from Keta have produced the players that form the core of the national team, the Black Sharks.
Organizers are hoping the event will offer a platform to engage the youth to stay away from social vices and instead engage in a sport that has seen Keta emerge as the premier destination for beach sports in Ghana. The Keta Cup beach soccer challenge will also provide a need recreational activity for the locals, families, and tourist and holiday revelers to boast tourism in the community.

Organizers also hope that the event will act as a catalyst for wider development in the Keta area. Sunset Sports Keta have land allocated (100x60metres) for the development of the Keta Beach Soccer Arena (sited on the beach front land outside the Aborigines Beach Resorts) and our partners Sandlanders Football, a not-for-profit group based in London have prepared designs for the Keta SoccerHub – an integrated sports and community facility that will be used by the Keta Sandlanders FC and Sunset Sports Keta.
We will be raising awareness of the Keta Beach Soccer Arena and the Keta SoccerHub development during the Keta Beach Soccer Challenge and hope to engage sponsors in the development of this sustainable community facility.
