An EgyptAir airliner has been hijacked and forced to divert to Larnaca airport on the south coast of Cyprus, and it might all be due to failed romance.
Flight MS181, an Airbus A320 carrying 81 passengers from Alexandria to Cairo, was taken over after a passenger said he was wearing an explosives belt, international media has reported.
“The pilot said that a passenger told him he had an explosives vest and forced the plane to land in Larnaca,” the Egyptian civil aviation ministry said in a statement.
However, the UK Guardian reports that Egypt’s foreign ministry says it believes the hijacker’s supposed explosives belt might be a fake, and may have personal motives for hijacking the plane.
Martin Schulz, the Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades ruled out terrorism being behind the hijacking confirming instead that it had been instigated by a love-sick man determined to reunite with his former Cypriot wife.
“It’s all to do with a woman,” said the Cypriot president.
Some international media have described the hijacker as a Lebanese university professor.
The woman he names as his ex-wife is now being brought to the airport to take part in the negotiations.
The BBC reported the head of Alexandria’s Borg El Arab Airport saying passengers on board the EgyptAir flight, consisted of eight Americans, four Britons, two Belgians, one Italian, four Dutch and 30 Egyptians.
On Tuesday morning, the Guardian reported the hijacked plane still had two Britons, one Italian, and one Irish on board, while the other passengers were freed.
