Bad news for watermelon farmers in the Ada area as most of their produce are going waste days after harvesting because of a lack of patronage.
Market women are now buying large sizes of watermelon at Ghc 3.00 on the farms. It is expected that the price may drop to Ghc 2.00 in the next two weeks.
The medium size is now being sold at Ghc 1.00 whiles the small size’s goes for 10 and 20 pesewas.
On the shoulders of the Tema-Aflao high way, traders have displayed watermelons from Sege through Ada Kasseh. Many of these melons are abandoned on the farms or the selling places.
Finding out why farmers feel reluctant to transport their farm produce to Tema, Ashaiman and Accra for better price, a 
farmer, Madam Awo said they are not sure of making a profit because the cost of transportation is very expensive.
Madam Awo explained that a fully loaded Hyundai vehicle costs Ghc 300. and Ghc 400 for a mini kia truck as transportation fare to Accra, Tema and Ashaiman which not many can afford in addition to the Ghc 50.00 it costs to just load a truck.
She added that at times market women in the said markets disallow farmers to transport their farm produce direct to the markets thereby preventing them (farmers) from selling any time they send their goods.
