Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) is convinced the national team, The Eagles has what it takes to play at high international level by training to get better and stronger.
Speaking to the media after Ghana thrashed Benin 46-5 in the opening game of the 3-nation Rugby Africa Regional Challenge on Sunday, he commended The Eagles and challenged them to play harder and better in their next game against Togo who he believes will come in stronger than the Beninois Squirrels.
Mr. Mensah noted that past governments have not supported sports in this country which has affected the development of so-called lesser known sports, which are major disciplines in some countries.
He was sad that the government of Ghana had not contributed to the international rugby tournament taking place at the Accra Sports stadium, and the association forced to seek support from private sources and corporate sponsorship.
He thanked Accra Brewery Ltd – Club Beer, Gino, Interplast, Iqmenn, AMS, Golden Tulip Hotel and EverPure Mineral Water for their support.
Looking further beyond the RARC, the GRFU President said The Eagles are waiting for the 2018 Commonwealth Games organisers to announce the qualification process.
He stressed that the best Rugby nations in the world are in the Commonwealth, naming countries like New Zealand, Australia, Fuji, South Africa, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland who are rated among the best in the world.
The man who was wearing Number 24 of the Ghana national jersey said: “Commonwealth Games Rugby is the same as the Olympics Games or the competition is even higher and Ghana is going to be ready to rub shoulders with the best of the world.
“We want to be ready, we are not setting the bar low, why set the bar low. When this tournament is over we will take a short break, and start preparing for serious competition.
“Our current goal is to take care of our physicality, fitness, mental preparation and technical tactical ability to be in top shape and ready for any serious competition”.
Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) who was at the stadium to support the Ghana team together with his Secretary General Richard Akpokavie and Nana Mankata, an executive board member of the GOC, all expressed optimism that Ghana Sports would be better, but people must be prepared to sacrifice by working hard, because the nation is behind in preparation of athletes for competition, and this time round with a change in leadership, things must change positively to enhance the search for gold at international competition.
Meanwhile, coach of the Eagles, Lovemore Kuzerara is confident his boys will fly over the Togolese on Sunday.
Benin will play Togo on Wednesday in the second Group Game in the tournament which has brought some international rugby players and officials to Accra.
