An exploding pressure cooker left a former champion boxer with severe facial injuries and caused him to lose most of his sight.

Guillermo Rigondeaux was rushed to hospital after the “freak accident” which occurred at his home in Miami.

The 41-year-old was cooking a meal when the pot exploded, his manager Alex Bornote explained to El Nuevo Herald.

“When the pot exploded and we saw how Rigondeaux was left, we thought the worst,” he said.

“Because his face and eyes looked very bad as a result of the impact of the explosion.”

Bornote said that the former world champion across two weight divisions was left with only around 20 per cent of his vision as a result of the blast.

Fortunately, as his manager went on to specify, doctors are hopeful Rigondeaux will be able to make a full recovery in time.

‘El Chacal’ rose to fame in the boxing world by building one of the all-time greatest amateur records.

On top of winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals at bantamweight at Sydney 2000 and four years later in Athens, he also won titles at the world championships, the World Cup and the Pan American Games.

Rigondeaux’s amateur career saw him lose only 12 times in a staggering 463 fights.

He turned professional in 2009, after defecting from Cuba to move to the United States and went on to become world champion, holding super-bantamweight titles between 2013 and 2017.

Rigondeaux challenged for the WBO junior lightweight title in 2017, but suffered defeat at the hands of Vasiliy Lomachenko.
